Manna-da: A Tribute to a Brilliant Footballer
Politics and culture are intricately connected. Without an understanding of culture, politics may become misunderstood and misinterpreted. Equally important are the effective foreign policy decisions which rely on the understandings of foreign cultures. I found a moving article (# 1 below) about an Indian footballer in The Economist magazine, which portrays humility and integrity of human nature and not just the essence of the game. By understanding the nature of the Indians, from this article for example, we can decipher how the politicians and policy makers think in India or in the sub continent. I published an article in NPR (# 2 below) a while back about sports and I wrote about playing barefoot. The Economist article described similar traits among the footballers in the 1940s. This is more than a trait. This is a part of a culture shapes the very nature of the Indians and the people in the Subcontinent.
